March 24, 2009 - 8:04 pm No Comments

There probably isn’t a person on this planet that hasn’t suffered pain at some point and the reason we have this distasteful experience is as a defense against continuing a particular action; like a person who picks up something heavy and hurts their back, so the pain stops them from picking up anything else. Anything can trigger pain from a headache to a broken bone but the pain gives us an indication of where and what the problem is. Sometimes, however, pain isn’t dealt with so easily and it remains with us despite all efforts to banish it.

People who suffer with back injuries, arthritis or migraines for instance are said to be suffering with ‘chronic pain’; which doesn’t go away. There is no preventative action you can take to stop chronic pain and it can affect someone at anytime during their life from almost any situation from accident, injury or disease. Chronic pain often long outlives its original cause, worsening over time and taking on a life of its own and the longer chronic pain goes untreated, the worse it becomes.

Unfortunately, prescription medication, which is the normal way to deal with the pain, can become ineffective over prolonged periods requiring higher doses and the chance of dangerous side effects increase; now people are turning to wards more natural pain relief methods. Although there are a number of natural pain relief systems in use, probably the most often used is acupuncture especially by those who unfortunately suffer with chronic pain. Originating in China, acupuncture involves piercing the skin with thin needles on specific points of the body.

Patients claim acupuncture has proven effective in treating ailments such as neck pain, migraine headaches, arthritic pain, and even depression. Other alternative therapies are used to provide natural pain relief like herbal remedies which can also make claim to being side effect free. For the reduction in arthritic pain, Emu oil can be used and people with scarring pain can try vitamin E; these are just two natural pain relief remedies of the many available.

The only problem to using herbal remedies as treatments is they do not provide instant results but rather a gradual build up; however, they are not going to cause problems to the system as only natural products are taken.

So despite all this advice, it is possible to lower the risk of needing natural pain relief during your life if you maintain a healthy diet and avoid those foods which we know to be detrimental to long term health like processed foods and foods that have a high fat or salt content. People often underestimate the need for proper sleep and disregard any advice on regular exercise like walking and refraining from using the elevator to use the stairs, both of which are good for the heart.

Important Information for Easing Your Lower Back Pain

March 23, 2009 - 4:17 pm No Comments

Four out of five of people experience back pain, often lower back pain, at some point in their life. Since it could happen to you, you should be aware of what causes it and how to prevent it in order to eliminate back pain.

As we age, we lose a lot of our body’s natural muscle tone and elasticity. We also tend to lose bone strength as we age. Our spinal discs lose flexibility due to the loss of fluid. This means that they do a less effective job of protecting the vertebrae. Simply growing older can be a cause of lower back pain.

A strain, sprain or spasm in your muscles or ligaments can result in the rupture of a spinal disc. This in turn places pressure on the nerves in your spinal cord. Our back lets us know about this with the neural signals we know as pain. What are the causes of these strains, sprains and spasms? Generally these are injuries which are caused by trying to lift heavy weights or overextending muscles.

Diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis are also contributors to lower back pain. Other possible issues are spinal abnormalities, viral infections as well as irritation in your joints or discs.

Frequently, physical and lifestyle circumstances also lead to lower back pain. This includes poor sleeping position, bad posture, lack of fitness, smoking, being overweight (even weight gain from pregnancy), or stress. Often, lower back pain and hip pain appear together. If your body has scar tissue from an earlier injury, buildup in the region could weaken your back and lead to more serious damage over time.

When lower back pain is accompanied by various other symptoms, it’s best to treat the situation seriously and check with your doctor. The symptoms to keep an eye on include progressive weakness in your legs, bladder or bowel control issues, fever, and pain during coughing. These signs might indicate problems such as a pinched nerve. If you have diabetes, your back pain might be connected to neuropathy.

Back pain management is important. If your back pain is chronic, there’s a chance it stems from inefficient body mechanics. Always maintain correct posture and when you lift objects, use your legs instead of your back. As well, strengthen your back through exercise. Check that your workplace implements proper ergonomics in areas such as furniture and tools. This will help protect your body from suffering lower back pain.
